Clayton Coolidge Rhodes, 91, of Marble Hill, Mo., peacefully departed this life at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, MO, on Oct. 12, 2016. He was born August 10, 1925, near Bessville, Mo., the third child of P.F. & Della Robins Rhodes.
Clayton was inducted into the US Navy on Oct. 5, 1943. After training he served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Rudyard Bay CVE81 in the Pacific. He received the Victory Medal, Asiatic - Pacific Campaign Medal with 5 stars, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 21, 1945.
Visitation will be on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, fr 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Hutchings Funeral Chapel in Marble Hill. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, Oct. 14, 2016, at the funeral home with burial to follow in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield.
He was an avid fisherman and a gifted and talented craftsman. In retirement he spent many hours helping his nephew and brother on the farm and pursuing his many interests of building and crafting knives, wooden toys of every description, rocking chairs, and tables with inlaid wood, many of which have become cherished family treasurers.
Clayton is a member of New Salem Baptist Church of Marble Hill. He is survived by two brothers, Charles and Winford Rhodes of Marble Hill; and one sister, Anna Mae Irvin, also of Marble Hill; his beloved dog Carlo; and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; brothers: Clinton, Paul, and Delmar; and sisters: Ruby Fuller and Juanita Brown.
Visitation will held at Hutchings Funeral Chapel on Thurs., Oct. 13, 2016, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be on Friday, Oct. 14, 2016, at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Randy Poole officiating. Burial will follow in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield, Mo., with military honors.
