Esther Lillian (Brown) Garner

Esther Lillian Garner, 93, of Scopus, Mo., passed away at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, Mo., on Nov. 16, 2016. Born in Scopus, Mo., on Jan. 16, 1923, she was the daughter of Roy and Eula Nanney Brown. On Jan. 27, 1940, she married Leo Garner at Marble Hill. He died on April 15, 1966.

Esther and Leo made their home at Blomeyer and Chaffee, Mo., during their early years of marriage. Esther worked at the shoe factory and raised her children. In 1962 they moved to Lutesville where she and Leo opened a restaurant. She sewed, made quilts, and taught herself to crochet. They moved to her family's property near Scopus, where Esther gardened and canned all the food produced. She was a member of Mt. Zion Church from 1940 until the present.

She is survived by seven children: Roy (Pam) Garner and Norma (Burl) Ragsdale, both of Scopus, June (Forrest) Lynn of Chaffee, Mary (Charlie) George of Dexter, Mo.; David (Brenda) Garner of Brownwood, Mo.. Faye (Eddie) Faries of Ferguson, Mo., and Bob (Edy) Garner of Washburn, Mo.; 20 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 34 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers: Howard Brown of Scopus and Bill Brown of Texas; and three sisters: Margie Stevens of Marble Hill, Laverne Cloninger and Katherine Borders, both of Oregon. She was preceded in death by three grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and four brothers.

Visitation will be on Monday, Nov. 21, 2016, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Hutchings Funeral Chapel in Marble Hill. Funeral services will be at Mt. Zion Church on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Mt. Zion Cemetery Association.
